Anesthesia Services


 

1. Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC):

  • Consists of continuous intra-operative monitoring by an anesthesiologist or CRNA following the American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA)
  • Patients vitals, oxygenation, respiration, and airway are being monitored and managed according to safety protocols
  • MAC without Sedation - Consists of ASA standard safety monitoring the surgeon uses local to numb the are of procedure and this technique can be combined with a regional nerve block
  • MAC with Sedation - Consists of ASA standard safety monitoring, medication is given through an intravenous (IV) line, sedation is titrated and can range from light, where the patient just feels very relaxed and may be needed to follow commands, to heavy, where the patient is unaware of the environment and may have amnesia of the event. This technique can also be combined with a regional nerve block.


2. General Anesthesia:

  • A balanced anesthesia technique consisting of inhalation agents to produce a state of "sleep" for the procedure where the patient is not aware of the operation or environment
  • Full ASA monitors and warming blanket placed
  • Some experience throat soreness from the breathing device that is placed after the patient falls asleep for the airway management and ventilator support
  • Pain medication is titrated throughout the operation and rescue doses are available in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU) and the regional blocks are always discussed if applicable for pain management activation by the patient
  • Post-operative nausea and shivering are aggressively treated in the PACU


3. Regional Anesthesia (Nerve Block):

  • We combine state-of-the-art ultrasound guidance techniques with nerve stimulation for patient safety and comfort
  • Consists of placing numbing medication (local anesthetic) close to a nerve bundle and blocking pain signals from reaching the brain; similar to a dentist numbing a tooth
  • We institute safety procedure protocols and aseptic techniques to reduce rare complications like injury to nerves, infection, and toxicity
  • Regional nerve blocks can last over 16 hours, thereby reducing narcotic use after surgery which leads to fewer side-effects, like nausea from pain medications, superior postoperative pain control, and a more comfortable functional recovery
