Neck Pain Q & A

What Causes Neck Pain?

The structures in the neck support the head and rotate hundreds of times on any given day. Because of this, the neck is a common source of pain. Several factors can influence neck pain, including:

  • Cervical disc disease
  • Arthritis in the neck (cervical spondylosis)
  • Traumatic injury
  • Poor posture
  • Muscle strain

Any damage to the intricate musculoskeletal system of the neck can result in pain.

What Can I Do At Home to Relieve My Neck Pain?

If your neck pain just started, you can take some pain-relieving measures at home to see if that helps. Try to avoid activities that keep your neck in a non-neutral position, such as reading or painting.

Avoid prolonged periods in front of the computer as well. When you do need to use the computer, use proper posture and ergonomic placement of your computer and mouse.

With temporary pain, it’s important to rest and refrain from strenuous activity. Find a comfortable position and place a towel or pillow under your neck for support. Lying in bed for several days will decondition your neck muscles, so it’s essential to maintain a mild level of activity.

Targeted stretches and exercises may help correct imbalances in your neck muscles. To ensure you don’t make your injury worse, follow all instructions from Dr. Tran or your physical therapist.

If you’ve tried all these at-home treatments and you still have pain, it’s time to see Dr. Tran.

How Do You Treat Neck Pain?

  • Chiropractic Care: Dr. Tran can coordinate your chiropractic care with trusted chiropractors who will perform gentle neck manipulations as an adjunct to help treat neck pain.
  • Physical Therapy: If the muscles are weak on one side of your neck and overactive on the other side, a physical therapist can help reverse those imbalances. Traction and posture therapy accompany many neck pain therapies.
  • Medication: Dr. Tran may suggest over-the-counter or prescription medication to reduce pain and inflammation. Muscle relaxants give relief if you’re having muscle spasms in your neck.
  • External Techniques: Ice therapy reduces inflammation in your neck whereas heat therapy increases blood flow to the area. Dr. Tran may suggest that you alternate with hot and cold packs to facilitate healing in your neck. He may also recommend a soft collar to restrict neck movement or massage to help ease your pain.
  • Injections: Steroid and anesthetic injections in the cervical spine provide short-term relief from inflammation and pain. For some cases of neck pain, BCT Medical Associates can also use radiofrequency ablation, a treatment using electromagnetic waves to destroy nerves that cause pain.
  • Surgery: Surgery is rarely needed or recommended for neck pain. However, some people with severe debilitating neck problems may benefit from surgery. Dr. Tran can help coordinate your neck surgery with trusted surgeons.
