Pain Management Q & A

What Type of Pain Can the Clinic Help With?

Dr. Tran can help you manage pain in your musculoskeletal system. He commonly sees patients with:

  • Neuropathy
  • Back, knee, shoulder, or elbow pain
  • Arthritis
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Joint pain
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Migraines

Most often, Dr. Tran helps people with ongoing (chronic) pain, as many cases of sudden (acute) pain resolve on their own.

When Should I See the Doctor?

You’re welcome to see Dr. Tran anytime you’re experiencing pain or having an autoimmune flare-up. Don’t hesitate to call the clinic if you’re unsure whether to come in or not.

Other instances in which Dr. Tran recommends you see him right away include:

  • Your pain is severe or intolerable
  • The pain worsens, or the symptoms change
  • Home remedies haven’t helped
  • The pain doesn’t resolve on its own after two weeks
  • Your aches and pains interfere with your work or daily activities

What Can I Expect At My First Appointment?

Your first appointment is all about getting to know you and investigating the cause of your pain. Be prepared to receive testing and answer lots of questions specific to your pain.

At your appointment, the friendly staff at BCT Medical Associates brings you into an exam room, takes your vitals, and asks some basic questions about your health. Then, Dr. Tran comes in and asks about the origin and characteristics of your pain. He takes a medical history and performs a physical exam to see if he can discover any clues about your pain.

Once Dr. Tran has a better idea about your pain, he may order additional tests to rule out underlying health conditions and confirm his diagnosis. He may order blood tests, nerve testing, X-rays, or other imaging tests or labs. After he has a clearer picture of your situation, he can create a treatment plan for your pain.

What’s Your Treatment Approach for Pain?

Dr. Tran starts with the most conservative treatment approach first and gradually introduces more progressive methods.

He has you use at-home and over-the-counter techniques such as pain medication, physical therapies, and heat and ice therapy. He can also provide workplace ergonomic and postural counsel to improve your back health.

In most cases, a multifaceted approach that includes self-care and appropriate activity or rest improves pain. From there, Dr. Tran moves on to medical pain management in the form of:

  • Corticosteroid shots
  • Chiropractic adjustments
  • Physical therapy
  • Prescription pain or anti-inflammatory medication
  • Antibiotics
  • Arthrocentesis (fluid removal from joints)
